Deul is nature resort located on the right bank of Ajay River, on the backdrop of Gurjanjal forest. River Ajay flows on one side and the other side is tropical forest of year old dense Sal trees. If you like the scenic beauty of tropical Bengal this place is must see. Away from the city crowds, speeding vehicles a picturesque hamlet offers fresh air with full of life.
Deul’s history can be traced back to 1500 AD. Gopraj Ishwar Ghosh, who was also called Ichhai Ghosh was a hardcore devotee of the Shakti (Power). The Istadevi (personal god) of Ichhai Ghosh was Shyamarupa. Ichhai Ghosh flourished during the era of Mahipala, the pala emperor. The Cholas attacked Gouda under the leadership of Rajendra Chola and at the same time Mahmud was plundering and defeating the Hindu kings of western India. The pala emperor was losing its ground and disintegrating. Samamta Sen of Rurh, Ranasura of Dakshin (south) Rurh and Govindchandra of Vanga became totally independent kings and separated themselves from the pala rule. During that period Ichhai Ghosh defeated Karnsen, the king of Senbhum, and his capital Trisasthi Garh came under the rule of Ichhai Ghosh. Much later, Lausen, the son of Karnsen defeated and killed Ichhai Ghosh in the forests of Garh.
The deul(temple) of Ichhai Ghosh is a 500 year old temple still stands erect with its glory and dignity. Interestingly the temple does not have an idol in it.
Jaydev and Kenduli , the birth place of famous Bengali poet Jaydev is located on the other bank of river Ajay. This place has developed as a religious place with many temples and hermitages. The Baul mela is held during Makar Sankranti. Walk to cross the river through a Vassa pool(floating bridge) or a boat during the monsoon.
Osho Says "A Baul is a flowering. A Baul is a flowing energy. The Baul is not a seeker, the Baul is one who has found. The Baul is a SIDDHA: one who has looked into life and realized that all is available and there is no need to seek. One has just to participate in this mystery called life. He dances, he sings, he enjoys, he is blissful for no reason at all." Although dancing and singing Bauls can be found anytime in Jaydev-kenduli who spreads the message "being human" is the only religion, best time to visit this place is Makar Sankranti. Walking through the forest of Garh or the bank of Ajay River can be an overwhelming experience. If you are lucky you may find wild peacocks, deer's, foxes even elephants in the garh forest.
You can take the following trains from Howrah and reach Durgapur station. Although Panagarh is the nearest railhead, we do not recommend Panagraph as most of the Express Trains does not halt. You have to hire a private taxi to reach Deul from Durgapur Station.
