Lava, located at an altitude of 2350 meters in eastern Himalayan range is complemented for its natural beauty. This small hamlet is 103 KM fromSiliguri and 34 KM from Kalingpong, located in Darjeeling district of West Bengal. This is one of the few places in West Bengal which witnesses good amount of snowfall in winter. The natural scenic beauty is dotted by woodlands of Pine, Birch and Juniper trees. Rare spices of orchids are natured in this serene land. The abundant forests are a preferred spot for picnicking, trekking and bird-watching. Lava has currently become a favorite traveler destination for folks living on the coast of province, and touristy has become the source of living for the inhabitants. You can have the perfect view of Mount Kanchanjhanga from this place
Lava is also an entry point for the Neora Vally National Park, with a border with Sikkim and Bhutan. The forest in Neora Vally enjoys such a wild growth that sunlight finds difficulty to touch the ground. Most of its inaccessible terrain is still unknown, throws a challenge to nature lovers and trekkers to discover it. The highest point of this park is Rachela Danda at an elevation of 10600 feet. Dense bamboo groves, lush green valley, bright and colorful canopy of Rhododendron, rare orchids, mesmerizing streams and snowcapped picks at the backdrop from this picturesque landscape.
During the day the Bhutanese monastery can be visited by walk. Rishap, 8 KM from Lava, another picture perfect place can be reached by trekking or by trekker.
Changey Falls, just 12 KM is another great place to see. Near Changey, there is one sunrise point Ghanti Dara.
This place is a trekker’s paradise, Jelepla and Rachela Pass is 12 KM trekking distance, which borders West Bengal, Sikkim and Bhutan.
You can take the following trains from Howrah and reach New Jalpaiguri station. Reach Siliguri bus stand from New Jalpaiguri station by Rickshaw, Three wheeler or Taxi. You have to take State transport bus of Bengal /Bhutan or private buses or hire trekker or private taxi to reach Lava.
